Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) was founded in Yan’an, Shaanxi Province in 1940. It is the first science and engineering university founded by the Communist Party of China (CPC). Since the founding of New China, BIT has always been among the key universities in China and the first batch of universities which have entered the national “211 Project”, “985 Project” and the “Top A World-class University”. The university is affiliated to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. For more than 80 years since its founding, BIT has always been following the command of the Party and cultivating talents for the Party and the country. Founded and led by the CPC, BIT provides higher education with Chinese characteristics and blazes a path of integrating revolutionary traditions into cultivating talents. Based on advantages of national defense and in pursuit of serving national strategies, BIT blazes a path of strengthening the military to serve the country. Based on principles of openness, inclusiveness, integration and coordination, BIT blazes a path of pursuing innovative development.

BIT began to offer post-graduate education in 1953 which was later resumed after China’s Reform and Opening up in 1978. In 1981, it was approved by the State Council and listed in China’s first group of institutions which were admitted of doctoral and master program authorization. In 1984, it was approved as one of the first 22 universities that established pilot graduate schools. In 1996, it was honored to be among the first group of pilot institutions of Master of Engineering program. In 1997, it was approved as an authorized institution for master degree in Engineering. In 2006, it admitted overseas graduates with degree for the first time. In 2012, it was approved and listed in the first group of pilot institutions of Doctor of Engineering program. In 2019, it was approved as one of the institutions self-auditing the first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization. In 2022, it was approved as one of the first 18 pilot institutions of cultivating national outstanding engineers.

After nearly 40 years’ efforts, post-graduate education has made great headway marked by the increasing number of academic disciplines, the growing scale of academic education, the continuous improvement of cultivation quality and the continuous emergence of landmark achievements. Each year, BIT sends about 100,000 high-level talents for the country. It has become China’s important base for cultivating top innovative talents.

As socialism with Chinese characteristics enters a new era, the Graduate School adheres to the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, focuses on the fundamental task of cultivating virtuous students and adopts the education philosophy of “Virtue, Expertise, Truth-seeking, Innovation and Inclusiveness”. The Graduate School takes on the mission of cultivating high-level talents with solid theoretical foundation and expertise, innovative ability and international vision, and responsibility for the society and the new era, and striving to cultivate socialist builders and successors with all-round development in morality, intelligence, physique, art and labor.

Continuous expansion of degree programs and academic education scale

BIT offers increasingly more degree programs, and the discipline influence has increased significantly. BIT offers 33 first-level discipline doctoral programs and 15 professional degree categories, including 4 engineering doctor categories and 6 engineering master categories. It has 9 disciplines covering engineering, science, management, literature, economics, education, law, art, and interdisciplines. 4 disciplines including Weapon Science and Technology, Control Science and Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, and Physics have entered the ranks of world-class discipline construction, among which Weapon Science and Technology ranks first in the country. 6 disciplines have entered the top US.News 50. 10 disciplines have entered the top 1% of ESI, of which 4 are in the top 1‰.

The graduate education scale continues to expand, and the quantity and quality of the supervisor team have improved. BIT has more than 20,000 full-time graduate students, up by 62% compared to 2017. It includes 5,083 academic doctors, 1,132 engineering doctors, 5,718 academic masters, 8,087 professional masters, and 497 overseas students with degree. Currently, BIT has 2,570 graduate supervisors, including 1,326 doctoral supervisors, up by 85% compared to 2017. The supervisor team has 39 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, 143 national outstanding talents, and 249 national distinguished young talents.

Continuous reform of graduate education

The Graduate School attaches great importance to the quality of the development, adopts the management and work philosophy of “top-level planning, system improvement, supervision strengthening, efficient service, and innovation”, and focuses on pioneering spirit, reform, and education quality. Since 2016, BIT has successively proposed the “Graduate Education 666 Project Implementation Plan”, “Five-Sphere Talent Cultivation Quality Assurance System”, “Four Types and Seven Dimensions Integrated Cultivation System for Undergraduate, Master, and Doctor”, “Bellwether Innovative Talent Cultivation”, “6+1 Action Plan for Talent Cultivation Reform”, “D-3E-4F+5G Supervisor Education Standards”, “Excellent Engineering Talent Cultivation Model in all Aspects” and other systematic reform measures to comprehensively improve the quality of graduate cultivation, and strive to create a new highland for graduate education.

Significant improvement of graduate cultivation capability

BIT continues to promote the construction of high-quality educational resources. By improving the discipline system, creating excellent courses and books, expanding international exchange opportunities, carrying out high-level academic activities and creating a high-level scientific research platform, BIT takes multiple measures to provide a fair environment and fertile ground for the all-round development of high-level talents.

In recent years, 1 textbook has been chosen as National Excellent Graduate Teaching Material and 9 textbooks has been approved by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology as “14th Five-Year Plan” textbooks. The course “Engineering Ethics” has been chosen as the National Curriculum Ideological and Political Demonstration Course. Two courses have been approved as English brand course for international students in China. 252 courses taught in English are opened. 50 high-quality online sharing courses are offered, 44 of which are among the first batch of courses launched on the China’s Graduate Smart Education Platform. School-level cooperation agreements with 372 foreign universities are signed. Student exchange projects with 65 foreign universities are set up. More than 180 graduates are jointly trained by CSC each year. BIT also holds more than 100 academic activities or lectures each year, such as “Lectures” and “21st Century Frontier Science Forum”, and invites academicians, overseas scholars, and corporate experts to deliver lectures. 2 professional degree graduate joint cultivation bases have been approved as national exemplary bases. BIT has 9 national key laboratories and engineering centers, 11 key laboratories and centers of the Ministry of Education, 60 key laboratories of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and Beijing, and 3 collaborative innovation centers of “2011”.

Continuous emergence of landmark achievements

In the past five years, 149 dissertations have been granted the honor “National Excellent Dissertations”. Graduate students have published 3 Nature/Science main journal papers and 31 Nature/Science sub-journal papers as the first author. Graduate students have made great achievements in high-level scientific and technological competitions at home and abroad, and have won 1,198 awards of scientific and technological innovation competitions at or above the provincial and ministerial level, and more than 170 awards in national or international high-level competitions. Among these competitions, graduate students have consecutively won the first prize of ABU Dhabi International UAV Competition, two first prizes of the national “Internet+” competition in three years, five first prizes of Formula Student Autonomous China, and the first prize of FinTechathon in continuous years.

For graduate education, BIT has won 1 second prize of the National Education and Teaching Achievement, 1 first prize of teaching achievements awarded by Association Chinese Graduate Education, and 17 awards of Beijing Teaching Achievement Award of Higher Education (9 first prizes and 8 second prizes). The Graduate School has hosted 8 national graduate conferences, including national workshop on engineering graduate education, international conference on graduate education, and annual conference of Association of Chinese Graduate Schools, etc. Besides, the Graduate School has been invited to give more than 20 lectures at National Graduate Education Conference, and has received coverage from China Education Television, Xinhua Net, Guangming Online, Tencent, Guangming Daily, China Education Newspaper, Beijing Daily and other media.

Under the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, BIT will take the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China as a start, focus on key areas and cutting-edge science and technology of national economic development, strive to cultivate high-level talents with both integrity and professional competence, and promote the development of a “double world-class” university, thus contributing to the realization of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and the cause of building China into a great modern socialist country.
