    The school of Mechanical Engineering has 16 research institutes and centers. They are respectively Special vehicle research institute, Electric Vehicle Engineering and Technology Center (EVETC), Automobile Research Institute, Vibration and Noise Control Laboratory, Engine Research Institute, The Research Center of Power Machinery, Laboratory of Fluid Mechanics and Engineering, Institute of Thermal Engineering, Institute of Turbomachinery, Advanced Machining Technology Laboratory (AMT Lab), Micro Manufacturing Technology Laboratory, Digital Manufacturing Laboratory, The Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineering (IISE), Laser Micro/Nano Fabrication Laboratory, Institute of Detection and Control and The Institute of Mechatronics. After years of development, it has formed 8 research directions with distinctive characteristics and high academic reputation:

     (1) Modern Vehicle Theory & Technology: It mainly focuses on Theory and Integration of Vehicle System, Vehicle System Dynamics, NVH of Vehicle System, Theory of Vehicle Reliability, Theory and Technology of New Type Transmission System, Theory & Technology of Unmanned Vehicle, having reached the internationally advanced level in the technologies of vehicle integrated transmission, hydraulic transmission, high-power hydraulic transmission, electromechanical composite transmission and vehicle suspension.

     (2) New Energy & Energy Conservation Vehicle Technology: It mainly focuses on Theory of Electric Vehicle Design, Integration and Control of Electric Vehicle, Safe and Efficient Use of Vehicle-Mounted Energy, Theory & Technology of Integrated Electric Drive System with High Efficiency & High Energy Density. It is in the forefront of the international market for pure electric commercial vehicle platform technology and pure electric bus application technology.

     (3) Technology of Unmanned Vehicle and Intelligent Vehicle: It mainly focuses on the research of unmanned driving technology, multivariable large data machine learning, large data intelligent technology, cognition and understanding of environment perception and driving scene and state estimation and motion control based on vehicle dynamics and kinematics. It has obvious advantages and features in the intelligent control of unmanned systems.

     (4)Technology of Vehicle Power: It mainly focuses on fuel combustion and high-efficiency heat work conversion, vehicle power system integrated control theory and integrated design method, internal combustion engine turbocharger system design and regulation technology, power machinery heat engine coupling failure and vibration noise mechanism, theory of new concept power system, emission mechanism of internal combustion engines and their environmental effects. It has reached the internationally advanced level in high-strength diesel engines. 

     (5)Fluid Mechanical Hydrodynamics and Enhanced Heat and Mass Transfer: It focuses on complex flow characteristics inside fluid machinery, drag reduction in airborne vehicles, cavitating and supercavitating flow mechanism, enhanced heat transfer and efficient cooling, and efficient solar energy utilization.

     (6) Advanced Manufacturing Technology: It focuses on digital design and manufacturing, Machining and simulation of difficult-to-cut materials, quality control and monitoring, production process management and control technology, takeing obvious advantages in cutting of difficult-to-machine materials, CAD/CAM and non-destructive testing technologies.

     (7) Non-silicon micro/nano manufacturing: It focuses on ultra-fast laser micro/nano manufacturing multi-scale modeling, electronic dynamic regulation of ultra-fast laser micro/nano manufacturing new methods, ultra-fast laser micro/nano manufacturing new applications, precision micro-mini manufacturing technology, nano-materials Synthetic and micro/nano processing, etc, taking great advantage in in precision micro-fabrication and equipment technology, and lie in the forefront of laser micro/nano manufacturing.

     (8)Mechanical Design Theory and Method: It mainly focuses on micro-miniature power system design theory and method, micro/nano mechanical watch / interface behavior and regulation mechanism, high-efficiency precision drive and transmission new principle, extreme working condition mechanical parts tribology design, with distinctive advantage in micro-power system design theory and method, high-speed heavy-duty transmission tribology and micro/nano mechanical interface design.
