Global Collaborations in Doctoral Education: Developments, Opportunities and Challenges

Workshop Overview

In our 2018 series, the UKCGE explored the impact of the Global Challenges Research Fund on developments in doctoral education. These impacts ranged from:

  • Growth in dual/joint doctoral awards with HE institutions in ODA-eligible countries.
  • Increasing number of doctoral programmes oriented around challenge-based research or research into Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Growing internationalisation of PGR populations in UK Universities, and increased focus on PGRs from ODA-eligible countries.

In 2019, we continue these discussions by looking at latest developments in North-South Global collaborations in doctoral education. The workshop will examine:

  • The changing nature of Trans-National Education (TNE) partnerships as international partners seek to develop their own research capacity and capability.
  • The role of international scholarships, such as the Commonwealth Scholarship, in developing global collaborations.
  • The challenges involved in delivering North-South cotutelles and joint doctoral awards, particularly in managing transitions between different research environments.
  • Developments in technology-enhanced learning in doctoral education.

What Will the Outcomes Be?

Those attending the event can expect to come away with a greater awareness of:

  • Developments in PhD production in ODA-eligible countries
